Today marks the closing of Modesto’s historic 7th Street Bridge. Originally built in 1916 during the first World War, it was originally was part of highway 99. After a century of wear and tear, it is being replaced with a new bridge that will undoubtedly not be as cool. Construction begins today.

The Stanislaus County Department of Public Works and City of Modesto officials estimate the new bridge will take 2 years to complete. The stated cost will be $134 million.

Thankfully the four iconic lion statues at the north entrances of the bridge, will be preserved.
