Former First Tee Director Pleads No Contest in Stockton Court To Embezzling Funds

A former executive connected to the youth golf nonprofit First Tee of San Joaquin has entered a plea in San Joaquin County Superior Court.
Court records show Joseph Thomas Smith, 47, pleaded no contest to two felony grand theft charges related to money taken from the organization.
Several other counts were dismissed as part of the plea.
During the court proceeding, a $52,575 restitution payment was accepted by a representative from First Tee of San Joaquin, according to the court minute order.
The case stems from allegations that funds intended for youth golf programs in San Joaquin County were misappropriated while Smith was in a position of leadership.
Smith is scheduled to return to court October 2, 2026 for further proceedings related to the case.
