TURLOCK- The Stanislaus County District Attorney has filed a misdemeanor domestic violence battery charge against Stockton Fire Chief Erik Anthony Newman. He was arrested last month on June 20th for assaulting a woman he lived in Turlock. According to the charges Newman inflicted “corporal injury resulting in a traumatic condition” on his girlfriend.

In June Newman was arrested at the request of Stanislaus authorities with the assistance of Stockton PD at City Hall in Stockton and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail. He posted a $50,000 bail bond and was released. He is due to return to court July 19th.

Newman has been Stockton’s Fire Chief since 2015 and was set to retire on June 30th and receive a lifelong pension from Stockton tax payers while planning to also be paid to serve as the Fire Chief for San Francisco, a job for which he was a finalist. That job has since been filled and Newman has been placed on “administrative leave” by Stockton’s city manager Kurt Wilson. Mayor Michael Tubbs has yet to speak publicly on the matter.
