MANTECA-The City of Manteca hasn’t released the following statement regarding the 2017 homicide of a man and carjacking of another woman:

“On May 2, 2017, Angel Israel Miranda (20 years old) attempted to carjack Mr. Stephen Austin Cain (60 years old) as Mr. Cain drove his vehicle in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant located in the 2000 block of Daniels St. in the City of Manteca.  During the course of the attempted carjacking Miranda shot Mr. Cain multiple times and as a result Mr. Cain died at the scene.

Miranda fled the scene on foot and then successfully carjacked a female victim using that victim’s vehicle to flee to Ripon, CA.  Once in Ripon, CA Miranda was stopped by former Ripon Police Officer  Raul Hernandez for an unrelated traffic offense.  At the time of the stop Officer Hernandez was unaware Miranda had just committed the murder in Manteca.  Although only initially stopped for a minor traffic violation, Officer Hernandez developed information which led him to contact the Manteca Police Department regarding Miranda.  Officer Hernandez was advised Miranda was the suspect in the murder and carjacking and he was immediately arrested without incident.  Officer Hernandez is a former Ripon Police Officer only because the Manteca Police Department was fortunate enough to hire him a Police Officer more than a year ago.

On February 12, 2019, Miranda pled guilty to one count of 187 PC – Murder and one count of 215 PC – Carjacking, as well as an enhancement for personally using a firearm during the offense.  As a result of his guilty plea, Miranda will be formally sentenced on April 15, 2019 to a term of 35 years to life in prison.

The members of the Manteca Police Department extend our condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Cain and hope the adjudication of the case against Miranda brings some closure to them for this tragedy.”
