Will Oakmoore Golf Course Become Homeless Camp? ⛳️ 🏕️

STOCKTON- The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors has released the following statement:
“At its last meeting, the Board authorized purchase of the Oakmoore Golf Course property, but no use for the property has been decided at this point. With more than 60 acres, there will be multiple options for use, both short term and long term.

In addition to moving some County departments to this location, one option that is being investigated is the option for safe camping on a small portion of property (approximately 3 acres). The Board will be discussing this item more at its December 10, 2024 meeting, once the purchase is complete. Our goal is to make homelessness rare and non-reoccurring.
Successful safe camping locations, like the one in Placer County, are a model for short-term temporary housing that is clean and safe for its residents. Safe camping models like the ones under consideration include supportive services and a path to permanent housing as the ultimate solution and desired outcome.

Safe camping is only one piece of the Board’s approach to the homeless crisis in our community. We have worked with the cities to double the shelter bed capacity, built more supportive housing, and expanded mental health and substance abuse programs to break the cycle that leads to homelessness. We remain committed to a multi-prong approach to this complex issue. We know that programs like SJCares, which does homeless outreach and case management, and enforcing our no camping ordinance, will also be critical to the success of our approach.”
